Cos hire sleuths to check your CV for fake details

Did you know your CV may be passed on to a detective team to ensure that you have not misrepresented facts? In case of discrepancies, you could even lose the job you were offered. Companies, both domestic and foreign, including global banking major HSBC, the Reliance Group, Tata Sons, RPG Group, PNB MetLife and Wipro are hiring "resume fraud detective" or firms that specialise in cross checking information provided on CVs (curriculum vitae). The shrinking job market is pushing candidates to misrepresent facts on their resumes, analysts said. In fact, around 84% of organisations based in India have come across candidates who misrepresent facts on their job applications, a survey conducted by global consultancy Hill and Associates has found. "There have been situations, wherein we have hired candidates who have performed well on the job and found later through background checks that they misrepresented facts," Mr. Rajesh Relan, managing director, PNB MetLife told HT. Misrepresentation varies from the number of years of experience, salaries to even qualification, HR experts said. Sectors that receive maximum fraud resumes include manufacturing, banking and financial services and retail. "Such increase is expected during recession, corporate scandals and global job mobility causing higher unemployment," said Ms. Shalini Chakrabarty, country manager, Hill & Associates. "Altering mark sheets is a major discrepancy found in checks followed by altered years of passing," an official with Britannia Industries said.

Shell names Mr. Ben van Beurden as surprise choice for CEO

Royal Dutch Shell named head of refining Mr. Ben van Beurden to replace chief executive Mr. Peter Voser, a surprise appointment to steer Europe's biggest oil firm through an industry-wide battle to replace reserves and control costs. Analysts and investors had not considered Mr. Beurden, who has worked for the company for 30 years, as a possible contender to replace Mr. Voser next year. Their early focus was on finance director Mr. Simon Henry and other divisional heads Mr. Marvin Odum, Mr. Matthias Bichseland and Mr. Andrew Brown. Voser, who built the oil company into a leader in liquefied natural gas (LNG) and was finance director at the company before taking the helm in 2009, shocked the industry by announcing his early departure over two months ago.

CID probe exposes 'jobs for marriage' scam in Karnataka Public Service Commission

The Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC), which is being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department of police for allegedly putting up lucrative posts for sale to prospective candidates, has more problems in hand. Investigations have revealed that some KPSC officials and members were also hand in glove with touts to engineer 'jobs for marriage' scam. In the corridors of Udyoga Soudha that houses KPSC office, the 'jobs for marriage' scam is popularly known as Taalibhagya Yojane in Kannada, and it benefited three stakeholders - meritorious job seekers, KPSC officials and parents of rich brides. According to the probe, more than 50 candidates, who secured Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS) cadre jobs during the last five years, have been beneficiaries of Taalibhagya Yojane. If a poor candidate scores high marks in the preliminary and mains examination and has the possibility of making it to the Grade 'A' post (KAS) after the personality test round, the names of such candidates are released to parents of prospective brides.

Slowdown begins to costs jobs in auto sector

Sports utility vehicle market leader Mahindra & Mahindra has laid off 500 temporary workers as production dipped at its manufacturing plants at the backdrop of rising inventory levels. Last week the company announced production holidays ranging from 1 to 8 days during the remaining period of this month at its plants to avoid pile up of inventory and keep production in line with retail demand. The Mumbai-based company has also signalled that the Rs 5,000 crore capital expenditure lined up for this year and next two years may get postponed by 1-2 years as existing capacities will take more time to reach peak levels. The company is however yet to take a concrete call on this. "We have reduced 500 temporary workers from across our plants due to the prevailing situation within the auto industry. We have not yet taken any call on delaying investments but if the current situation prevails we may have to", a mail from the spokesperson at Mahindra stated.

60 colour-blind BEST drivers back on the job

Nearly 60 bus drivers who had been benched for colour blindness are being reinstated by the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking, after receiving clearance from the state medical ophthalmology board in JJ Hospital. In 2012, BEST medical officials reassessed the medical records of onboard staff including drivers and conductors, to bring down human errors in accident cases. During the recheck, they found that 142 drivers suffering from colour blindness had been working for six years after their initial tests, till March 30, 2013. These 142 drivers were amongst the 800 drivers recruited in 2007 on daily wages and were subsequently given permanent driving jobs in 2009. Following the re-assessment, the drivers were kept from driving and were asked to undergo medical examinations at JJ Hospital. "A section of the drivers have been cleared by the medical board at JJ Hospital and are fit to drive. The remaining staff found unfit for driving will be reassigned as conductors or be given alternate work," said Mr. OP Gupta, general manager, BEST.

SanDisk sees a win-win situation in volatile tech scene

There are very few industries that are destined to grow in today's extremely volatile technology market where product cycles are now coming down to as low as three months. But flash storage is one technology that seems to be in a win-win situation thanks to its inevitability in smartphones and tablets along with its growing popularity in quick-boot laptops and ultra books. During a meeting last week, Mr. Sumit Sadana, Executive Vice-President and Chief Strategy Officer of SanDisk, a global leader in flash technology said the company was in a comfortable position at the moment with growth in embedded SSDs (solid state drives), removable SD (secure digital) cards and the enterprise markets. "We have tremendous growth in the mobile segment and with client SSDs that have started replacing HDDs (hard disk drives) in computers. Then there is the enterprise market which is a growth vector for SanDisk," he told Business Today.

New hiring at Indian Banks' Association sparks controversy

The Indian Banks' Association (IBA) sparked off a fresh controversy relating to an appointment for the post of chief executive, which will fall vacant after the existing incumbent – Mr. K Ramakrishnan demits office by July end. Mr. K R Kamath, the chairman of the industry body is believed to have appointed Mr. M V Tanksale, the CMD of Central Bank of India (CBI) as the new office bearer, industry sources told Moneycontrol.com. However, there is so far no official communication in this regard from IBA. Mr. Kamath also heads the Punjab National Bank ( PNB ) as CMD. Mr. Tanksale, who had served PNB as the executive director under Mr. Kamath will retire this month from the Central Bank of India . Mr. Tanksale had joined the Central Bank of India in October, 2011. However, the process of appointment is something that has raised many eye brows. As per the standard practice, IBA generally floats public notice and invites applications for posts lying vacant. This time, it is alleged, the practice has been flouted. "IBA did not float any public notice seeking applications for the post. IBA has appointed Mr. Tanksale quite arbitrarily," a senior official familiar with the development told moneycontrol.com.

HC sets right ambiguity in Teachers Recruitment notification

Setting right an ambiguity in the Teachers Recruitment Board notification for recruitment of 1,093 lecturers in Tamil Nadu, Madras High Court has said the teaching experience shall be determined in accordance with the qualification acquired by an aspirant as per UGC rules. Justice D Hariparanthaman, before whom a plea opposing a key change in the calculation of teaching experience of lecturer-aspirant came up for hearing, asked authorities to follow the process being followed for about 25 years now. The first phase of the two-stage lecturer recruitment involves award of two marks each for each year of teaching experience, subject to a maximum of 15 marks. For academic qualifications too varying marks were awarded. While a Ph.D. could fetch you a maximum of nine marks, for M.Phil with SLET/NET a maximum of six marks is allotted. Interview carrying 10 marks will be held in the second phase. After the present notification was issued in June this year, a correction was inserted in it, stating that the work experience will be calculated from the date the particular qualification is acquired.
