Mysterious Steve Jobs emails hang over Apple trial

The late Mr. Steve Jobs has taken centre stage in the latest twist in the Apple antitrust trial on eBooks. A federal court attempted to plumb the meaning of a series of unsent emails Jobs addressed to Eddy Cue, an Apple senior vice president assigned with negotiating eBooks contracts with major publishers in late 2009 and early 2010 before the launch of the iPad. Even though the emails were never sent, government prosecutors argue that they help establish a pattern of Apple serving as a "ringleader" in a conspiracy with the publishers to force the retail book industry to adopt higher prices of eBooks'. The government contends that Apple forced publishers to change their pricing system with Amazon, resulting in higher eBook prices across the industry and costing consumers hundreds of millions of dollars. Apple maintains that it was indifferent to Amazon's contracts with the publishers and that higher eBook prices were set by publishers, not Apple. All of the draft emails responded to a message from Mr. Cue outlining the emerging price of Apple eBooks, which would be USD 12.99 or USD 14.99, up from the USD 9.99 Amazon had sold for bestsellers.

Job autonomy, trust in leadership key to improving workplace

Frontline employees will help in their organization's improvement if they see that there is a high degree of autonomy in their jobs and have trust in their leaders, a new research by two Indian business professors has suggested. The study conducted by Mr. Gopesh Anand and Mr. Dilip Chhajed, professors of business administration at University of Illinois found that a flexible environment plays a significant role in increasing an employee's commitment to continuous improvement initiatives. Mr. Anand said that continuous improvement initiatives are typically bundled with employee empowerment techniques. He asserted that it's always said that if employees are empowered, they will take care of the improvements, however, this does not work. Mr. Chhajed said that in employee empowerment is being forced upon employees by management. He said that this makes the employees feel that they are being forced into a job that they may not even see as being very useful. The research, co-written with Mr. Luis Delfin, a former graduate student, has advanced 3 arguments on how workers' commitment to continuous improvement in the workplace can be enhanced.

UGC to stop funding management departments of universities

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has said it will immediately stop funding the management departments of universities plan to start or upgrade their facilities. In a notice this month, posted on its website, the regulator has asked varsities to settle their grant accounts and dues incurred up to 31 May in this regard. The UGC had started a scheme of development assistance to management departments in 2007, when there were 1,150 of them in the country, official data show, a number that has swelled to 3,700 in 2012. The move might crimp the supply of management graduates in the job market but is expected to have little impact as India's growth has slowed to 5% in the year ended March from 9.3% in 2007-08. The tough economic environment has hit B-schools hard in the past few years. Many top institutions, including the premier Indian Institutes of Management, have struggled to find jobs for all graduates this year because many firms have shrunk hiring plans, Mint reported on 15 March.

London education especially valued by Indian employers: Survey

Around 2 lakh Indians study overseas each year, and are increasingly returning to India to pursue their careers. Education at London universities appears to be especially valued by Indian employers, according to a new survey. At over 3,000 Indian employers, international experience was found to be a key attribute sought in prospective employees, making Indian graduates studying abroad attractive hires. Confirming the same, Ms. Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, CEO of biotech major Biocon said, "As a global business, we are looking to recruit the best talent from across the world. We appreciate the value an education in London can provide and are increasingly hiring people who have studied abroad."Around 81 per cent of the CEOs and HR Directors surveyed in the nine top Indian cities have opined that Indian graduates who have studied at a London university get a global perspective. The survey, which was commissioned by the London Universities International Partnership, noted the fast-track career prospects that open up for Indian graduates with a London education. With fewer IT jobs, prospects brighten in finance, micro SMEs

Fresh engineering graduates who passed out this year will have a tough time finding jobs in the IT industry. Nasscom had raised a red flag on job prospects for freshers. It said the IT and ITeS industry will hire about 50,000 fewer people this year. As against 1.80 lakh people that it absorbed last year, the industry will hire only 1.30 lakh. About seven lakh engineering graduates will have to look at other options. Though there are other sectors such as manufacturing and infrastructure that also absorb freshers, it is the IT industry that has been the major recruiter. Several IT companies have either stopped going to engineering colleges or drastically reduced the number of people they hire from campuses. IT majors such as Mahindra Satyam are recruiting freshers based only on need and by word of mouth (through employee referrals and social media) to meet demand.

CPI protest over railway jobs on June 18

With a majority of the jobs in the Guntakal railway division going to candidates from Bihar and UP, anger is rising among the unemployed youth of Rayalaseema. The Communist Party of India has decided to stage a protest at the Divisional Railway Manager's office at Guntakal on June 18. The CPI wants a probe into all the recruitments in the last decade and the filling of Group-D posts with zone-wise local candidates. The party will also press for recruitment through local employment exchanges instead of the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB). CPI district secretary Mr. D. Jagadish told this newspaper that the recruitment of Group-D posts through the RRB was mostly helping candidates from Bihar. Most of the Group-D posts in the South Central (Secunderabad) zone and Guntakal division were held by Biharis at present, he noted. "The railway ministry was headed mostly by ministers from Bihar since the last two-three decades," he said. He said that the most of the employees were not regular in their duties after getting recruitment in Guntakal division as they engage in private jobs in their own states too.

Engineers, MBAs join up as assistants in SBI

At a time when the chips are down in the economy and the threat of downsizing looms in the private sector, candidates with professional qualifications are finding entry level jobs in public sector banks attractive. This is seen in the recruitment trend in State Bank of India and the scenario is not different in other public sector banks. Though the qualification for the Assistant's position, the lowest rung in mainline banking operations, is 12th class (with minimum 60 per cent aggregate marks) or a degree from a recognised university, SBI has managed to attract candidates with professional qualifications in computer engineering and business administration. Expansion of the branch network, coupled with the need to mitigate staff shortage, particularly at rural and semi-urban branches, saw SBI recruiting 20,682 new Assistants in FY2013. More than 30 lakh candidates appeared for the test for the Assistants' position.
