Indian Airline firms may hire 5,000 this year

Air carriers have embarked on an aggressive hiring strategy with plans to add over 5,000 jobs this year, industry officials have said. Improvement in passenger traffic trends and the proposed entry of Malaysian budget carrier AirAsia are said to be the main triggers for the stepped-up hiring activities among private carriers, they added. Having put in place its top leadership team, AirAsia India is conducting interviews and road shows in different parts of the country to get ground staff and cabin crew on board ahead of its proposed launch later this year. Meanwhile, existing players such as Jet Airways and IndiGo have stepped up their own hiring activities and have published job advertisements for cabin crew members through walk-in interviews to be held next week. Budget carriers SpiceJet and IndiGo are conducting regular recruitment drives on a weekly basis in some major cities. At present, an estimated 60,000 are employed with various domestic air carriers. "Last year was bad for aviation, and saw net addition of around 1,700 people, but 2013 will be a boom year and we will see more than 3,500 people added. Over the next three years, hiring growth will be 100-150%," said Mr. Rajesh Kumar, CEO, MyHiringClub.com. Air passenger traffic rose by nearly 5% in May this year, after a decline in the previous month, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation said last week, while observing that the demand has shown an increasing trend. Not a good time to find jobs in India: Gallup

A day after official data showed unemployment had increased 10% in a gap of two years till June 2012 in India, a survey by US-based Gallup revealed respondents were more pessimist about finding jobs in India in 2012, compared to the previous year. Only 30% of the respondents felt India was a good place to work in 2012, while 36% had agreed to it a year ago. On the other hand, half the respondents thought last year was not a good time to find jobs in India. Data released by the National Sample Survey Office had revealed the number of unemployed people had increased to 10.8 million on January 1, 2012, compared with 9.8 million on January 1, 2010. Among the 10 largest economies — which also includes India — Brazil was the strongest performer with 56% of its citizens giving a thumbs up on job prospects. India's economy grew 4.8% in January-March, just a percentage point higher than the October-December period. Even then, the growth was quite a lot faster compared to 0.55% witnessed by Brazil during January-March, compared to 2.6% in the October-December period. According to Gallup's findings, the situation around the world more or less remained gloomy in 2012. The survey showed that 57% of the adults worldwide felt it was a bad time to find a job in their local communities, same as was revealed in the 2011 poll.

No salary revision for Presidency University teachers in West Bengal

The state government has said Presidency University wouldn't be able to pay more salary to retain teachers. This comes after seven teachers quit the institution because of poor pay. The state government is, however, giving the university Rs. 4.10 crore to improve its infrastructure besides asking vice-chancellor Ms. Malabika Sarkar to request the mentor group to conduct a few classes. "Although seven teachers have quit Presidency, it does not mean that we have reasons to panic. This is a natural phenomenon in all the state universities. People change jobs to better their careers," education minister Mr. Bratya Basu said. Teachers, who left the university, said their salary was much less than their former employment in central universities or foreign universities. West Bengal State Council for Higher Education chairman Mr. Sugata Marjit said it wouldn't be possible to give better pay packages to Presidency teachers. "Presidency is a state-aided university. We can't violate the law and offer teachers more salary. It's legally not possible. Moreover, we have never asked Presidency to recruit faculty from foreign varsities." He added, "The government is already offering extra grants to Presidency teachers for research. The university is also being given several chair professors."

Mushrooming banks set to fuel jobs boom

An imminent expansion in the banking sector could bring cheer to the otherwise sluggish job market. With the RBI set to issue new licences to a host of private companies, around 50,000 jobs are likely to be created over the next two years in the sector, said analysts and headhunters. With the new banks deciding to focus on the retail business and not remain confined to corporate banking, their recruitment drives have begun to gather steam. A range of jobs are expected to be up for grabs in banking covering segments such as retail banking, corporate sales, business development and wealth advisory. "There will be large-scale recruitment for all those companies that get banking licence," a senior executive of a company planning to apply for a licence said. "But at this point, we cannot come up with estimates." State-owned banks have created 60,000 new openings in the last one year. "The banking sector is ripe with opportunities and there are lots of expectations from new licences," said Ms. Sangeeta Lala, senior vice-president at TeamLease, a staffing firm that supplies temporary workers to booming sectors. With many strategies being still in the pipeline and the focus likely on rural penetration, the banking industry may see aggressive migration of talent between private and public sector banks. "Companies prefer candidates with an average experience of 3-8 years for roles in retail banking and business development. To avoid talent crunch, we expect migration of talent within the banking industry," said Mr. Aditya Narayan Mishra, head, Randstad India, another staffing firm.

India Inc doles out 6-13% salary hike

India Inc is increasing employee salaries by a modest 6-13 per cent this year. In sectors such as IT and telecom, which are facing a bad year, the wage hike is being pegged at around 7-8 per cent, while companies in recession-free sectors, such as the pharmaceutical industry, are offering increases of 12-13 per cent. In addition to employee performance, a number of other factors, including company performance, industry norms, cost of living, inflation and demand for certain skills are taken into account while determining the pay hike. Mr. Sanjay Pillai, Vice-President, Human Resource, Hyundai, said: "As a norm, we conduct regular studies within the company taking into account myriad parameters. The final increment is arrived at after careful evaluation of all these parameters. For example, the auto industry faces a shortage of paint technicians and maintenance engineers. Compensation for these categories could, therefore, be higher." For real-estate players, this could be one of the worst years in terms of a wage hike. Real-estate watchers note that the slow movement in the sector has impacted wages. Also, industry is moving from a conventional system of wage hikes to a more performance-based approach. Mr. Ashok Kumar Gupta, HR head, Raheja Developers, notes that, "wage hikes are low as few infrastructure projects are going on-stream. Companies are moving towards performance-based pay, as in other sectors." The hotel industry this year offered pay hikes of 8-10 per cent. Mr. Vinay Ravi, Director (HR), Hyatt Regency, says though there was considerable growth in tourism revenue, which reflected in hotel toplines, inflation in food and energy bills took away a chunk of the margins.
