Indian Engineers Least Global Among BRIC Peers Among the BRIC nations, India's engineers were found least equipped to play a leading role in the global economy,. A five-year study involved 7,000 student surveys and interactions with 40 institutional heads and engineering faculty. The Stanford University study measured the quality of education, cost-effectiveness and equitable access. China was found to be ahead of India in providing quality education. The spending per student at China's premier Tsing Hua University was $51,000 a year, while at the Indian Institutes of Technology it was $8,000, Stanford Professor Rafiq Dossani said. Russia had the advantage of a strong science and engineering curriculum. India must address the need for a larger pool of instructors in the future because of its growing population. The government plays a financier's role in Brazil, but in India the Centre and states fight over control, and planning suffers. Source : 29-03-12   Hindustan Times   Compiled by Amresh Anjan

The fear of automation, replacing human workforce has always been lurking since the first computers arrived in offices. But in case of cloud it is predicted that it will create substantial number of jobs in India dispelling the fear of jobloss. Microsoft in association with IDC, recently came up with a survey pointing out that cloud computing will create more than 2 million jobs in India, which is 15 per cent of the total jobs predicted to be created worldwide. More than 50 per cent of these jobs will be generated in the small and medium businesses. The study also estimates that revenues from cloud innovation could reach US$1.1 trillion per year by 2015. App Development Opens Avenues For Women App development is evolving as a potential career option for women. The segment is grabbing their attention, whether or not they have a technical background. Srividya Vaidyanathan, co-founder of PixelMat, is one example. Her firm has made apps for iOS and Android and is now working with Microsoft to design and build apps for Windows. It is quite easy for a woman to work in the field, she says, because the process is systematic and hassle-free. Harish Vaidyanathan, director, Evangelism, Microsoft, says his firm is looking for women developers to create apps in certain categories. Their inherent sense of aestheticism is a plus in making apps that are beautiful. Women who may have an idea about a great app but not the required skills are being encouraged to approach Microsoft, which will build it for them. Small Towns Emerging As BPO Destinations Growing costs and higher attrition rates are prompting many global BPOs to set up shop in smaller towns. Aegis was among the pioneers of this trend. The Essar Group's BPO arm set up a 250-seater centre in Srinagar in 2010. It has since added 500 employees and attracted clients seeking capabilities and expertise in local languages. Genpact, WNS, Hinduja Global Services, Firstsource and Aditya Birla Mincas have taken the same route. Smaller cities offer advantages such as availability of talent, low attrition rate, affordable real estate, local government support and a better quality of life. Call centres, telecom, banking, financial services and insurance can be a major opportunity for Indian IT/BPO in the domestic market till 2020, according to NASSCOM. The challenges they face are finding senior managers prepared to move to these locations and unreliable network connectivity. Source : 01-04-12   Business Standard   Compiled by Amresh Anjan

AV Reddy, executive director of Transocean Express Logistics, estimated a 30 percent to 40 percent shortfall in the sector. The company has been unable to get skilled managers. Report: Higher Education Scenario Dismal A TeamLease Services report says the country is in a state of "higher education emergency". Enrolment in higher education is just 11 percent, half of the world average and well below the ratio in developed countries. The report cites three main reasons behind the trend. These are low enrolment in colleges, not enough numbers of children with access to colleges, and degrees that do not lead to jobs. The situation calls for solutions such as community colleges that would meet the needs of policy makers, employers and the youth, the report said. Being part-ITI, part-college and part-employment exchange, community colleges could play an important role, says Manish Sabharwal, chairman, TeamLease Services. India also has an uneven spread of higher educational institutes. Sixteen states do not have a single central university. Five states have more than 20 universities combined, and five have only one.
