India Is Net Job Creator For US Cos: Mr Som Mittal National Association of Software and Service Companies chief, Mr Som Mittal said that India is a net job creator for US companies, not the other way around, strongly refuting the public perception in Washington that outsourcing and free trade agreements are responsible for America's current economic woes. The US has emerged as a preferred destination for Indian investment. In fact, India now ranks second, behind the UAE, in the list of fastest-growing foreign investors in the US, he said in his article. Observing that India has never looked for publicity for its commercial connections to the US, Mr Mittal said India it has quietly become both a major investor in America and a prominent destination for American goods and services.

Planning To Take Sick Leave? Be Ready To Be Called 'Skiver' By Colleagues! You must have been really ill to have taken an off from work, but you should know that 50% of your colleagues probably feel that you are a skiver. Nine out of 10 of your colleagues will be more worried about having to do your work in your absence than feeling any sympathy. And only 8% will be a little worried about you. A quarter of those surveyed said they were the only people who were nice to them when they were poorly, revealed the survey conducted by nasal decongestant Otrivine. "It makes no sense to bring germs into the office so people sensibly stay at home when their sniffing, sneezing and coughing gets the better of them," according to a spokesperson. "Unfortunately, while rationally we understand that this is the right thing to do, emotionally we often think our sick colleagues are 'putting it on'. Of course, when we ourselves are sick, we expect everyone to believe us," he added.

US Jobseekers Head Downwards To Take Their Careers Upwards Facing a job crisis at home, more US citizens are moving to Australia where nearly 7,000 Americans are presently working on long-term visas, an 80 per cent jump over the past five years. US citizens are now the third-largest group applying for work visas, after British and Indian nationals, according to the Wall Street Journal, quoting Australian government data. Near-10 per cent unemployment at home drives more Americans to look for jobs Down Under, where China's thirst for iron ore and energy is transforming the Pacific nation into an economic powerhouse, the report revealed. Americans who have degrees in areas such as accounting or mining engineering as well as other skilled workers can obtain a non-renewable permit for as much as a three-year stay. Then, they can apply for the renewable 457 work visa, which grants up to a four-year stay. The number of US students in Australian universities has also jumped nearly 10 per cent in the past two years, according to the Australian Department of Immigration.

Companies Growing In The US But Hiring In Overseas Corporate profits are climbing up. Stock prices are also zooming. So why isn't anyone hiring? Actually, many American companies are hiring. But only in overseas, where sales are surging and the pipeline of orders is fat. More than half of the 15,000 people that Caterpillar Inc has hired this year were outside the country. UPS is also hiring at a faster clip overseas. For both companies, sales in international markets are growing at least twice as fast as within the country. "There's a huge difference between what is good for US companies versus what is good for the American economy. Many of the products being made overseas aren't coming back to the US. Demand has grown dramatically this year in emerging markets such as India, China and Brazil. Meanwhile, consumer demand in the US has been subdued. Companies will go where there are fast-growing markets and big profits," said Mr Jeffrey Sachs, globalisation expert and economist at Columbia University.

BPOs Now Offer To Bankroll Staff Education Pursuits To Curb Attrition Thrice in a week, Ms Naina Patel rushes from her office at Malad, in suburban Mumbai, to Bandra for her classes. The BPO employee is currently pursuing a diploma in marketing from ICFAI, which according to her will help her in climbing the career ladder. Her work comprises business development and involves documentation and collecting information for clients. She believes that this course will provide her the necessary theoretical exposure and clear certain concepts. Unlike several young professionals who quit their jobs to take up higher education, Ms Patel, who is an economics graduate from Mumbai University, has the good fortune of pursuing work and study at the same time. The best part, she says, is that her company, Intelenet Global Services, is offering a discount for the course fee, which means that instead of the Rs250,000 that the course demands, she had to shell out Rs200,000. "The employee discount was very useful," says Ms Patel. Just like her, several BPO professionals are getting discounts and reimbursements from their employers to pursue higher studies. With attrition increasing every day, BPOs have deployed this strategy to curb the outflow of talent.
