This World Cup, Keep Your Employees Away From The 'Peg' Of Life Drinkaware has revealed that every day more than 520,000 people in the UK go to work feeling hung over. It surveyed more than 1,000 adults and found that almost one in 10 people go to work suffering from the effects of too much alcohol intake at least twice a week. The alcohol charity has warned hangovers in the workplace are likely to become more rampant during the World Cup. Mr Chris Sorek, chief executive of Drinkaware, said turning up to work suffering from a headache and/or nausea caused by drinking could negatively impact performance. The survey also revealed that of those who are hung over at work, almost one in five admit struggling to keep on top of their workload and to making mistakes, and some 7% have had to leave early due to the resulting illness.

IT Department Wants More Recruits Faced with a severe shortage of 27,000 tax officials and assistants, the Income Tax (I-T) department is planning to take up the matter with Finance Minister Mr Pranab Mukherjee. The staff strength of the I-T department has remained stagnant at about 60,000 people since 1996, even as the number of tax payers has increased threefold to about 33 million in the last 15 years. The department needs to add about 3,000 tax officials, 8,000 inspectors and 16,000 tax assistants. Of about 8,600 officials it has now, only 3,500 are deployed for tax assessment, while the rest are posted in the other sections of the department such as head office, investigation, data collection.

Govt Likely To Postpone Air India Salary Cuts Till After Commonwealth Games The government is planning to defer its decision of wage cuts of employees of Air India until after the Commonwealth Games. To streamline the ailing carrier's finances, it had suggested steep wage cuts for senior employees last year. But this resulted in pilots striking work, crippling operations and prompting the Prime Minister to intervene. Now, despite Air India's management suggesting many stiff cost savings measures, there is a general consensus that any "turbulent" decisions such as wage cuts be postponed until after the Commonwealth Games in October.

Infosys To Achieve Its Hiring Target Soon Infosys Technologies is about to achieve its target of hiring 30,000 employees this year, and the company would also be despatching letters to its employees on compensation hikes in the coming month, CEO Mr S. Gopalakrishnan said. The situation was "back to normal," he said. However, the situation in Europe was a "cause for concern", he added.

Rural Women To Get Better Wages Now The biggest employment guarantee scheme of the World, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee (MGNREG) has ensured better wages for rural women. According to a survey conducted by the National Sample Survey (NSS) organization, disparity in wages between male and female workers in rural India has reduced between 2004-05 — when there was no MGNREG, and 2007-08 — when the scheme was introduced in most parts of rural India. Interestingly, the rural women working in MGNREG areas are now getting 54 per cent higher wages than casual women workers in urban areas. Conventionally, wages in rural areas have been less than those in urban areas but MGNEGS has changed the trend.

IT Firms Can Now Outsource Jobs To SEZs IT units in the domestic tariff area can now work from home, the commerce ministry said in a communication to SEZ development commissioners. The government has also allowed employees of IT units in SEZs to work from home or off-site locations. "Off-site employees of SEZs may be permitted to work from home or from some place outside the SEZ," the letter dated May 21 said. Previously, this relaxation was given to only "decapacitated" employees or those who were travelling. As per the industry people, with the flexibility, employees would be able to attend to customers' problems even when they were away from SEZs.

Summer Jobs Are Cool Jobs College students who are waiting to get a taste of self-earned money, or for business school sloggers who looking for that the right exposure or a project in between a course, this could be the right time to get a bit of both learning and earning. Optimism has returned to industry and so summer jobs—or two-month traineeships with a stipend---are back in the reckoning as companies add capacities and expand their distribution networks. These days, firms in sectors such as automobiles and auto components, consumer durables, software and information technology, banking and pharmaceuticals have been expanding and in the process offer more internship positions. In Delhi, the Commonwealth Games has come up with new summer jobs ranging from administration, event management, transport and catering services. "At present close to 1500 offers have been made and we will require another 700 during the games. The average salary will range from Rs 20,000 to Rs 70,000 per month," said Mr Lalit Bhanot, secretary general Commonwealth Games Organising Committee. If the buzzwords last summer were retrenchment and shrinking capacities, this summer companies are talking of capacity addition and growth.

Delhi High Court Directs Police To Investigate MCD's 'Ghost' Employees Scam The city Commissioner of Police, Mr Y.S. Dadwal has been directed by the Delhi High Court to conduct an independent probe into the scam of 'ghost' employees in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Chief Justice Mr Dipak Misra and Justice Madan B. Lokur directed the police commissioner to carry out a detailed inquiry into allegations that the civic agency has on its rolls certain employees that do not exist. Last year, in November, the MCD revealed that there were 22,853 gardeners and sweepers as 'ghost employees' on its payrolls and admitted it was an administrative lapse that cost the civic body Rs.17 crore every month.

Mr Gustav Baldauf Appointed As Air India's COO Mr Gustav Baldauf, Air India's first chief operating officer, is going to join the airline from June 1. But AI's chairman and MD Mr Arvind Jadhav said that his compensation and key result areas are yet to be finalised. If he does join from June, it would be in the middle of opposition from certain sections of employees who have questioned the need to bring in an expat at an "exorbitant" salary to manage the national carrier.

BPOs Boost US Jobs To cash in on the opportunity after the recently enacted US healthcare bill, the $12.4-billion Indian business process outsourcing sector is on an overdrive to beef up its manpower presence in the US. Known popularly as ObamaCare, the US Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act promises, is aimed at extending health insurance cover to 32 million more Americans. Since the law came into force, several Indian BPOs like Genpact, Aegis and Avantha have sewn up partnerships and acquisitions to tap the billions that will be spent to overhaul the US health IT infrastructure towards actualising one of Obama administration's biggest reforms yet.

British Airways Cabin Crew Went On Strike British Airways cabin crew went on a five-day strike last Monday after talks on a long-running dispute over wages, job cuts and working conditions broke down in acrimony. The airline said it planned to operate over 60 percent of long-haul flights and more than 50 percent of short-haul flights from London's main Heathrow Airport, allowing 70 percent of passengers to reach their destinations.
