Gender Bias or What? Female CEOs’ Pay Nearly Half Of Their Male Counterparts In The US
According to a recent survey, female chief executives earned just 58% of what their male counterparts did in 2008, and their salary packages were slashed three times as much as their male peers. Corporate governance research firm, the Corporate Library said total realised compensation — which includes base salary, bonuses, perquisites, benefits, and the value realized on the exercise of options and vesting of other equity — declined by a median of 18.5% in 2008 for female CEOs. During the same time, the compensation of male CEOs fell 6.1%, the survey revealed. Top female chief executives’ median base salary was $40,000 higher in comparison to that for male CEOs, but men’s’ discretionary bonuses were more than 3.5 times larger than those given to females, and men’s perquisite payments were nearly twice the amount received by women, the survey said.

It’s Time For Jobseekers To Smile Again - 25-50% Hike In Hiring Seen Next Yr End
The recruitment industry predicts a relatively significant rise in jobs in the second half of the fiscal year. “As against the March-September period, when hardly any hiring took place, the October-April period may see surge of 25 to 50% in hiring across sectors,” said Mr. Kris Lakshmikanth, CEO Headhunters. He added that people centric industries such as software, BPO, retail, infrastructure and financial services, will hire people in the next six months.

Wipro Works Out A Deal With The French Staff
Wipro Ltd has got into an "amicable settlement" with 60 employees of NewLogic Technologies who work on the semiconductor intellectual properties (IPs) at Sophia Antipolis research facility in France. The company has offered a range of options in the severance package including use of the facility by employees for IP development, cash compensation, redeployment within Wipro or extended leave for scouting a job.

Peace In Honda Now
The two-month-long confrontation between the management and workers of Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) came to an end after a long meeting. The third production line at the Manesar-based HMSI plant finally started production early after the two sides signed a wage pact during discussions. Plagued by unrest created by workers and the dip in production by over 50 per cent, the company threatened to close its scooter plant at Industrial Model Township, Manesar and shift to a different location. The plant employs 5,000 workers. The company had also sought the state government’s intervention in the matter.

Retail Dream Becomes A Distant Dream For Many FMCG, Telecom Executives
With retailers cutting back operations, many senior executives from fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and telecom who became a part of the retail industry a couple of years ago are making a silent comeback. These include some high-fi names including former banker, Mr. Murlidhara Kadaba, who was head of financial services at Reliance Retail, has moved back to his old industry as senior managing director, Altamount Capital Management, a wealth management firm. Mr. Kadaba, who has worked with Citibank and American Express, continues to be associated with Reliance Retail as advisor. Mr. Amit Bedi, who was the business head for Reliance Retail, has moved back to telecom as CEO for Tata Teleservices, Bihar. Mr. Bedi earlier led the marketing operations for Hutchison (now Vodafone) in Punjab.

Air India To Cut Its Staff
Air India is planning to stop flying on 20 unprofitable routes, reduce fleet strength from 146 to 90, and offer both `leave without pay' and voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) to some of its employees. These were some of the proposals that were put forward by top officials of the airline to the Group of Ministers on Aviation, headed by Finance Minister Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, last week. The Airlines posted a loss of over Rs 5,000 crore in 2008-09 and expects the figure to rise to Rs 7,200 crore this year. It has a bank overdraft of Rs 16,000 crore on which it pays interest of around Rs 4 crore every day. It also hopes to trim its annual Rs 3,500-crore wage bill by offering employees three years of leave without pay.

G4S To Employ Over 50, 000 People
Global security solutions provider, Group 4 Securicor (G4S) is planning to hire more than 50, 000 people over the next three years. Regional Marketing Director, Ms Rehana Qureshi said that the company, currently, employs 1, 30, 000 people in India and has been registering growth of 15-20 percent for the last several years.

RIL’s Headcount Plunges By 808
More than 1, 500 engineers were added to the payroll of Reliance Industries but the company’s total headcount has dipped by over 800 employees during 2008-2009. According to the company’s annual report for 2008-2009, Mukesh Ambani-led RIL had a total of 24, 679 employees at the end of last fiscal.

Shell Axes 5, 000 Jobs As Profit Tumble
Shell, Europe’s largest oil company by market value, said that it plans to cut 5, 000 jobs, after the net profit dropped 73 percent in the third quarter to $2.99 billion.

iGate To Increase Its Headcount By 1, 500 Next Year
IT services provider iGate announced that it plans to recruit 1, 500 people in 2010. Mr. Phaneesh Murthy, CEO of the company, said iGate’s plans were a reflection of the business environment.

DLF All Set For Recruitments Again
Realty giant, DLF said it will employ people to sustain growth of the company. In the financial year 2008-09, the headcount of the company was down by 818 people to 2,882 as on March 31, 2009, from 3,700 exactly a year ago, a drop of 22.1 per cent.

India Inc Readies For Hiring, Pay Hikes
Signs of economic recovery are becoming visible along with a rising confidence in the economy's growth. This is reflected by Corporate India hiring plans and higher pay packets for 2010. Hewitt Associates, which released the findings of its 'Asia Pacific Salary Increase Survey 2009-10' in India, stated employees in the fastest growing markets are more likely to see higher salary increases in 2010 than the others. The survey also revealed that employees in India are expected to receive the highest salary hike of 9.2 per cent in the Asia-Pacific region in 2010. They have received an average salary increase of 6.3 per cent in 2009.

US Airways To Cut 1,000 Jobs
US Airways is planning to trim its headcount by 1,000 employees, including 200 pilots, as part of its restructuring efforts. The reductions would include about 600 airport passenger and ramp service positions, approximately 200 pilot jobs and nearly 150 flight attendant positions, the company said in a statement.

Haryana Govt. Hires New Electoral Officer
The Haryana Government has named Ms Sumita Misra, IAS, as Chief Electoral Officer of the State with effect from November 1. As per an official note, Ms. Sumita Misra will also continue to hold her present charge of Director, Renewable Energy Sources.

Pilots Of Erstwhile Indian Airlines Threaten To Strike
A section of the Indian Commercial Pilots Association (ICPA) threatened to resort to strike if their demands were not met by the NACIL management by November 1. ICPA is the non-executive pilots body of erstwhile Indian Airlines. NACIL is the holding company of Air India and Indian Airlines formed after the merger of the two government-owned carriers in 2007. The pilots' body also rejected any pay-cut proposal by the management.

Railway Recruitment Exam In Urdu To Help The Youth In J&K
Railway minister, Ms Mamata Banerjee announced an array of measures for the benefit of people of Jammu and Kashmir, including conducting railways’ recruitment exams in Urdu to assist the local youth. The examinations would now be held on the same day throughout the country to help people from all states.

Gujarat Govt Plans To Cut 30, 000 Jobs In Schools
The Gujarat education department has issued new orders that will slash the non-teaching staff in grant-in-aid schools to almost one-fourth of the present approved strength of employees. Currently, there are nearly 45,000 non-teaching employees, including office superintendents, head clerks, senior clerks, junior clerks and peons, working in nearly 8,000 schools in the state. School managements fear that the resolution will have a severe effect on them as the number of approved manpower will be reduced to nearly 16,000 in all the schools.

2005 Batch IAS Officers Not Promoted Yet
IAS officers of the 2005 batch, belonging to Gujarat cadre, are still waiting to get promoted. According to the service rules, they became eligible in September to get senior time scale and promotions from assistant collector level to deputy secretary or district development officer-level positions. After attaining four years of experience, IAS officers are considered eligible for senior time scale. Besides that, promotions at senior level, like to the posts of secretary and principal secretary, are also due for quite some time.
