25,000 To Be Hired At TCS This Fiscal

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) plans to hire 25,000 people this year. The IT firm is aiming to earn 10 per cent of its total revenue from government projects in the next three years and wants to hire staff to support these projects. The company has a total headcount of 1.45 lakh. The company is also looking to tap government projects in emerging overseas markets such as China, Middle East, Africa, US, Latin America and South East Asia.

Tata Motors Enters A Pact With Workers’ Union Over Bonus

Tata Motors has signed a bonus agreement with the recognized Telco Workers Union. As per the agreement, the company will pay bonus for 2008-09 to its permanent employees to the tune of 15.27% of their annual salary. The company has also decided to induct around 280 of its temporary workers into its pay roll. With the signing of the agreement, around 4,000-odd permanent workers deployed at the Tata Motors plant will now be eligible to receive 15.27% bonus. The auto major had paid a bonus of 18.75% to its permanent workers during 2007-08.

Jet Airways Asked To Explain Pilots' Retrenchment

Regional Labour Commissioner has advised the management of Jet Airways to submit a written reply to the unions clarifying the reasons for the recent sacking of two pilots which has caused an agitation by other pilots. The pilots have threatened to go on strike on September 7. Jet has been asked to submit the report on or before this date.

Twitter Appoints Former Google Exec As COO

Microblogging service Twitter has appointed a former Google Inc executive Mr Dick Costolo as its chief operating officer. The fast-growing company is looking to build its management team as it seeks to start making money. In January, Twitter had hired a director of mobile business development. Mr Costolo was previously the CEO of Feedburner, which Google acquired in 2007. He worked at Google as a group product manager until June 2009.

30% US Workers Find Posting Employer Info On Social Sites Acceptable

According to a survey by insurance firm Travelers on ‘potential risks social media pose for businesses’, about one-third of employees in the US favour posting information about their employers on social networking sites as long as they consider it is true. The survey was conducted among 2,000 people across the US. It was found in the survey that one out of eight respondents post work-related information on social websites. The survey also found that two-thirds of respondents say their company does not have a policy in place for social media usage, or they are not aware that one exists.

2,98,000 Jobs Cut By US Private Cos In Aug

Private companies in the US eliminated 2,98,000 jobs in August, the lowest since September 2008. According to the ADP National Employment Report, non-farm private employment decreased 2,98,000 from July to August 2009. The estimated change of employment from June to July was revised by 11,000 from a decline of 3,71,000 to a decline of 3,60,000.

Matalan In UK To Recruit 1,800 Staff

Discount retail chain Matalan in the UK has kicked off a recruitment drive to hire 1,800 people. The firm has 203 stores across the country and is hiring 1,500 temporary staff for the festive period and 300 permanent employees for three new stores in Greater Manchester, Morayshire and London.

American Airlines To Slash 921 Flight Attendant Jobs

American Airlines would eliminate 921 or about 6 percent of the total number of flight attendant jobs as the airline struggles with dropping demand. The job cuts are part of a previously announced capacity cut. The airline had announced in June that it would cut capacity by 7.5 percent this year.

Whirlpool To Cut About 1,100 jobs At Its US Plant

Whirlpool Corp has decided to shut a plant in Evansville, Indiana and move production to a plant in Mexico. As a result, about 1.6 percent of its workforce or 1,100 jobs will be eliminated. In an effort to cut costs, Whirlpool has already consolidated its Chinese operations, reduced its contribution to retirement plans, closed plants and cut capital spending.

250 Indage Vintners Employees Quit

At least 250 staff members, including middle- and senior-level managers, of troubled wine maker Indage Vintners Ltd have put in their papers over the past two weeks. The mass resignations came after the company failed to pay them salaries since at least November 2008. Indage had 450 employees on its rolls and 150 on contract in its Indian and overseas operations.

US Employees Are Happy Despite Salary Cuts, Layoffs

According to a survey conducted by US job site SnagAJob.com, more than half (58 per cent) of Americans are happy at work despite tough economic conditions, layoffs, salary cuts and decrease in benefits. On the other hand, not everyone in the country is happy with their job prospects. Nearly 52 per cent reported a decline in job security, fearing job losses. The survey was conducted among 1,000 employees. The report also found that only one in four (24 per cent) said their happiness was based on the fact they were employed. 41 per cent said they were happy that their jobs give them personal satisfaction or suit their lifestyle.

Toyota To Shut Down Union Plant In California

Toyota has decided to shut down its only unionized plant in the United States, which is a joint venture with General Motors in California that G.M. abandoned as part of its recent bankruptcy. The plant employs 4,700 people and is the country’s only remaining auto plant west of San Antonio. It will be Toyota’s first experience with closing a plant in the United States. The United Automobile Workers union, which represents the plant’s hourly workers, has called the decision “illogical” and “devastating.”

Nokia Siemens Appoints Mr Rajeev Suri As CEO

Nokia Siemens Networks has named Mr Rajeev Suri chief executive officer (CEO) of the joint venture between Nokia Oyj. and Siemens AG. Mr Suri will succeed Mr Simon Beresford-Wylie. Currently, Mr Suri is the head of services at Nokia Siemens Networks. Having joined Nokia in 1995, he has served in several positions, including heading the Asia-Pacific region.
