Kiran Reddy Promises One Lakh Government Jobs in Andhra The Andhra state government would provide one lakh government jobs to the youth in various departments, announced chief minister Mr. N Kiran Kumar Reddy .The recruitment process was being made stringent and foolproof to ensure that only meritorious and eligible candidates were selected for these jobs without giving scope for irregularities .Delivering the Independence Day address after hoisting the national flag at the Parade Grounds in Secunderabad , Mr.Reddy said that15 lakh jobs would be created for youth in different industries and sectors in the next three years under the Rajiv Education and Employment Mission which will be launched shortly. He also assured that his government would take all possible steps to provide corruption-free and transparent governance. In an obvious reference to the ongoing movement for separate statehood to Telangana, the chief minister said the government was making efforts to remove regional imbalances. He also listed out various welfare schemes being implemented by the government. He claimed that his government was committed to the welfare of farmers and would continue to provide free power, input subsidy and loan eligibility cards to tenant farmers.

IMF`S Lagarde: Governments Still Have Options to Aid Jobs Advanced economies still have options to provide short-term support for jobs and growth even as they focus on medium-term fiscal consolidation, International Monetary Fund chief Ms. Christine Lagarde said. In an opinion piece published on the Financial Times website on Monday, Lagarde said fiscal adjustment "must resolve the conundrum of being neither too fast nor too slow."She said that short-term measures must be supportive of growth while economical in terms of their impact on fiscal sustainability and can support job creation, infrastructure and ease pain in housing markets. In the United States, Republican lawmakers have focused on spending cuts to shrink the U.S. budget deficit. They have resisted tax increases as a means to increase revenues.

Ekansh Trust Helps People with Disabilities Secure Jobs in Pune While the job fair for People with disabilities (PwD) held in September 2010 provided employment to about 100 people, Ekansh Trust, which serves the PwD, is working towards having more trained and ready candidates for its next job fair in 2012. Ekansh had organized a job fair for the PwD in September last year, the first of its kind in the city. During the two-day fair held on September 25 and 26 at the Indian Institute of Education, Kothrud, people with both minor and major disabilities with good qualifications took part. After the analysis of the results of the earlier job fair, the organization realized that lack of basic communication skills is one of the major limitations for people with disabilities. Ekansh, therefore, started training programmes for PwD while they are helping companies to prepare to accommodate such people.

Hyderabad Now Not Free Zone for Government Jobs In a significant victory for groups fighting for separate statehood to Telangana, President Pratibha Patil deleted clause 14 from the presidential order making Hyderabad a free zone for recruitment to government departments. The deletion of the controversial clause means Hyderabad will now be treated as part of VIth zone along with five other districts of Telangana. Following the deletion of the clause, 70 percent of gazetted and 85 percent of non-gazetted posts in the zone will be filled with locals while the remaining posts will be open to others. The Andhra Pradesh capital was so far considered a free zone. Telangana groups claim that candidates from Andhra and Rayalaseema regions were given priority in recruitments to all departments, especially in the police force. The government said it would go ahead with the test while Telangana students groups have threatened to disrupt it. Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) convener Mr. M. Kodandaram has demanded that the government postpones the test for one month so that candidates from Telangana get their due share in the jobs. Telecom Sector to Provide 1 Crore Jobs By 2012 Indian telecom sector will provide employment to around one crore people by 2012, a study by PwC has said. The telecom industry will provide about 28 lakh direct jobs and around 70 indirect jobs by 2012, the study commissioned by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) and done by PwC said. The mobile telephony industry in India witnessed unprecedented growth of more than 700%, from having less than 10 lakh subscribers in 1998 to over 75.2 crore subscribers in 2010, the study titled 'Indian Mobile Services Sector: Struggling to Maintain Sustainable Growth' said. The industry has also played a vital role in India's growth story and the industry today contributes nearly 2% to the GDP, the study said. The study, however, indicated that though the industry has taken significant strides in the past decade, the task of providing access to mobile services at affordable rates across the hinterlands remains incomplete.

23,000 Applicants Every Month in Chandigarh, Only 200 Get Jobs For a state that claims to be one of the fastest developing in the country, there are hardly any job opportunities for its youth. According to the latest figures provided by the department of employment, almost 10 lakh unemployed youth, including 2.5 lakh women, are registered with them looking for jobs. However, the rate of employment is abysmal. Out of an average of more than 23,000 applications received every month, only an odd 200 persons are placed against various available vacancies. In most of the cases it is the men who are able to land the jobs with the department hardly ever finding suitable vacancies against which women could be employed. Interestingly, most of the job opportunities, against which the vacancies are filled, come from Gurgaon and Faridabad with very few jobs available in the rest of the districts in the Haryana state.

US Postal Service Considers Cutting 120,000 Jobs The financially strapped U.S. Postal Service is considering cutting as many as 120,000 jobs. Facing a second year of losses totalling $8 billion or more, the agency also wants to pull its workers out of the retirement and health benefits plans covering federal workers and set up its own benefit systems. Congressional approval would be needed for either step, and both could be expected to face severe opposition from postal unions which have contracts that ban layoffs. The post office has cut 110,000 jobs over the last four years and is currently engaged in eliminating 7,500 administrative staff. In its 2010 annual report, the agency said it had 583,908 career employees. The loss of mail to the Internet and the decline in advertising caused by the recession has rocked the agency. Postal officials have said they will be unable to make a $5.5 billion payment to cover future employee health care costs due Sept. 30. It is the only federal agency required to make such a payment but, because of the complex way government finances are counted, eliminating it would make the federal budget deficit appear $5.5 billion larger.

Advertising Giant WPP to Ship Some US Jobs to India Global advertising firm WPP is planning to send finance-related jobs to India to prop up its North American operations where growth has been falling as the US slowdown forces companies to slash their advertising and marketing budgets. The WPP group advertising agencies embarking on this plan to send jobs to India include Ogilvy & Mather, JWT, Grey, Young & Rubicam (Y&R) and Wunderman. Marketing and advertising magazine "Advertising Age" reported that over 100 positions would be eliminated in the US in the coming months and moved to India. Most of the jobs moving to India deal with finance and could fall into India-based billings service provider Genpact's lap, according to company executives. Allowances as Part of EPF to Hit Net Salary Two high courts, Madhya Pradesh and Madras have recently passed rulings covering various allowances like conveyance allowance and special allowance as part of basic wages for calculation of Employees' Provident Fund contributions. Under the Employees' Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952 (EPF Act), employer and employer's contribution to provident fund is calculated on basic wages, dearness allowance and retaining allowance. The basic wages is defined to mean all emoluments in accordance with the terms of the contract of employment and which are paid or payable in cash, but does not include cash value of any food concession, dearness allowance, house-rent allowance, overtime allowance, bonus, commission or any other similar allowance and presents made by the employer. If the view of the two high courts is to be implemented, it would definitely mean lesser take home salary for the employees. Employer's cost may also rise substantially if the additional employer's contribution on such allowances is not adjusted from employee's CTC. But in the long run, the employees will benefit more as the additional contribution would come back to them after retirement with handsome tax free interest, which is at 9.5%.

After Air India, Kingfisher Delays Salary Payment After government-owned Air India, Kingfisher Airlines has delayed salaries of its employees. The UB Group-controlled airline has not paid salary for July. For the last one year, employees have been crediting their salaries on the 7th of every month. Earlier, the company used to pay on the 31st. The airline has staff strength of 6,000 and spends Rs 58 crore on salaries a month. According to the first quarter financial results, it has Rs 173.66 crore under the employees cost head, which has increased from Rs 163.40 crore during the same quarter last year. An executive said the airline had not paid the lease rental for three of its aircraft and the leasing company had asked the airline to return these. Kingfisher is the only listed carrier to have not turned profitable. It ended the financial year 2010-11 with a loss of Rs 1,027 crore. It also increased its losses in the first quarter to Rs 263 crore from Rs 187 crore during the same period last year. The airline has also delayed on payments to oil marketing companies and airport operators, among others. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd, recently stopped fuel supply to the airline for a few hours after the dues touched Rs 650 crore, of which Rs 170 crore was not covered by guarantees.

No Prescribed Salary Structure for Unaided Minority Schools Says Supreme Court In a setback to teachers in private unaided minority schools, the Supreme Court ruled they are not entitled to salary structure on par with their counterparts in government schools as their main source of funds is fees paid by parents. "The teachers of government schools are paid out of the Government funds and the teachers of government-aided schools are paid mostly out of government funds whereas the teachers of private unaided minority schools are paid out of the fees and other resources of the private schools," a bench of justices Mr. RV Raveendran and Mr. AK Patnaik said in a judgment. The bench passed the judgment while dismissing an appeal filed by certain aggrieved teachers of Himachal Pradesh-based St. Paul's Senior Secondary School complaining the management was not giving them salaries and perks on par with government school teachers. The school took the plea if the salary structure was enhanced it would have to enhance the fees of students, which would cast additional burden on parents.

Medical Teachers Skip Work for Salary Hike in Ahmedabad Over 1,500 medical teachers from seven government-run and grant-in-aid medical colleges in Ahmedabad went on a day-long mass casual leave on Friday 12th August to press for their demand for hike in their salary. The teachers, under the banner of the Gujarat Medical Teachers' Association (GMTA), have been protesting for the last 11 days. They organized bhajan in several medical colleges. The mass leave did not have much impact on emergency services in the hospitals attached to these colleges, but the outpatient departments and surgeries scheduled were affected. GMTA secretary Dr J C Makwana, who teaches at B J Medical College, said their salaries were less than the doctors serving in the state-run primary health centres or community health centres, as they were being paid as per the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations.

Hyderabad Lost 60,000 Jobs in 1 Year Hyderabad could have lost around 20,000 jobs in the manufacturing sector and more than double in the services sector in the last one year, according to industry body Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Fapcci).The industrial production in Hyderabad has been disrupted for over 15 days the last one year due to bandhs called for over the Telangana issue. "The bandhs are having both short and long-term impact on the trade and industry in the city. The city is losing its appeal as a prime investment destination," said Mr. Devendra Surana, senior vice-president of the Fapcci on Thursday at a press conference on 'Impact of Bandhs'. No new marquee companies were coming to Hyderabad, he said adding that some companies based in Hyderabad are planning to shift their base to outside Andhra Pradesh."Around 1,000 jobs were lost in the manufacturing sector just because three firms — Xerox, Quad Cables and Surana's automotive division— have decided to shift their operations out of the city," he said.

Jobs Skill Initiative to Benefit 10,000 Students More than 10,000 students from 30 colleges in the Chennai will benefit from the Confederation of Indian Industry's Employability Bridge initiative, which will ensure quality education and bridge the gap between industry and academia, according to Mr. N K Ranganath, Chairman, CII Tamil Nadu State Council. The initiative is a platform for synergizing efforts from various stakeholders including industry, academia and students, to address the skill requirement and availability of the industry, he said. Mr. Ranganath said the CII has signed MoU's with six colleges and 12 companies in the first phase.
